First came "green" switches. Now TRENDnet says it has come up with power-saving Wi-Fi.
The company says its GREENwifi technology reduces power consumption of wireless devices when a wireless device is idle and not connected to another wireless client, which for most devices is most of the day. The technology is said to also automatically lower its transmit power when associated with an access point with a strong signal.
TRENDnet claims GREENwifi products save 50% of the energy used by comparable WiFi products. Since wireless adapters aren’t exactly huge power hogs, you probably won’t notice a difference on your monthly electric bill. But GREENwifi could help improve battery life of portable products using GREENwifi adapters.
GREENwifi has been integrated into Version 2.0R of TRENDnet’s TEW-651BR 150Mbps Wireless N Home Router (shipping later in January) and its TEW-648UBM 150Mbps Micro Wireless N USB Adapter (already shipping). TRENDnet is adding GREENwifi into Version 3.0R of its TEW-652BRPWireless N Home Router ,which is scheduled to ship next month.
