The Rack Station RS409 is a lower-cost, lower performance version of Synology’s RS409+ that was announced in March. The hardware platform includes a 1.2 GHz Marvell Kirkwood processor, 256 MB of DDRII RAM, two Gigabit LAN ports, two USB2.0 ports and one eSATA port.
Four hot-swappable 3.5" SATA drive bays accept up to 2 TB drives for a total capacity of 8 TB that can be configured as single drives, in JBOD or RAID 0, 1, 5, 5+Spare or 6. An optional RX4 expansion chassis connects via an eSATA cable to increase total storage to 16 TB (two volumes of 8 TB).
The RS409 runs Synology’s Disk Station Manager 2.1 OS with a feature set that includes CIFS, AFP and NFS network filesystems, AD / NT domain support, FTP, secure FTP and HTTPs, LAMP webserving, iTunes and UPnP AV / DLNA media serving, photo sharing and more.
Synology said the RS409 is shipping now with street pricing around $750.
