Cisco spent its CES press event nickel today wooing service providers on its vision for yet another mashup of conventional TV, online content, social media and, of course, apps.
Cisco Videoscape is the latest version of Cisco’s overall video strategy. It is an open platform that utilizes the cloud, the network and client devices to deliver "new video experiences" over the Internet.
The new pieces are a home media gateway, IP settop box, Media Suite cloud services and Conductor for Videoscape glue that ties it all together.
All this is supposed to be easier to use, increase consumer entertainment choices, socially network it all and make content more mobile. And since Cisco is pitching to the incumbent entertainment barons vs. upstart online providers, they will probably make some money from it.
Cisco is currently working with "several major global service provider customers", including Telstra, to work the kinks out of the system.
