Securifi’s new IoT security service announced at CES 2017 is designed to protect households from botnet-based attacks like last September’s Mirai malware infestation. Available initially with Securifi’s Almond 3 combination router / automation hub, the new security service takes advantage of its Almond 3’s direct connection to Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Zigbee IoT devices, without the need to use techniques like ARP poisoning.
The new security service can detect devices prone to botnet attacks, flag devices with unusual outbound traffic patterns, determine compromised products, and monitor web browsing over a rolling 7 day period. Securifi noted outbound traffic monitoring is limited to checking destination IP addresses; data itself will not be decrypted, logged or viewed.
Securifi’s security processes – like automation rules, scenes, device control, are locally run and managed, with remote access available through Securifi’s cloud service. Additional security features include randomized passwords, 2048-bit encryption, and automated firmware updates, while access controls such as blocking and scheduling devices, and guest networks are also available.
The new IoT security service will be available starting January 23. All Almond 3 users will be able to sign up for a 30-day free trial. The monthly subscription fee will start with an introductory pricing of $3.99 "for a limited period". The price will increase to $9.99 "when additional features are rolled out".
Securifi’s subscription-based service will then cost $3.99 per month for another limited time, and eventually price out at $9.99 per month when additional features are added. Securifi says it plans to extend the service to work with its Almond+ and Almond 2015 routers.
