Cloud backup provider Backblaze says Enterprise hard drives don’t provide higher reliability and has the data to prove it.
Backblaze builds its own storage "pods" for its $5 / month all-you-can back up cloud service because it found that it was cheaper than buying general-purpose storage from the usual providers. The company is currently on its third generation of Storage Pod, and has amassed a lot of information about drive failure rates.
In a recent blog post, Backblaze presented its failure rate data for the consumer-grade drives it uses. Today, they’re back with another post presenting an analysis showing that Enterprise-grade drives actually have higher failure rates than consumer-grade drives.
Both articles are a good read and may challenge your views about consumer vs. enterprise grade drives.
