Berlin-based STRATO has launched its web storage service in the U.S.

HiDrive Free offers 5 GB of free online storage, joining many other services with similar entry-level offers. The service is offered by STRATO, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom based in Berlin, Germany.

Access is via web browser or apps available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7 devices. The service can also be mounted as a local drive and supports Microsoft Windows, MacOS and Linux.

HiDrive attempts to differentiate itself by using "strict safety measures" that are "goverened by German data privacy law – one of the strictest in the world in terms of data protection".

The 5 GB account is free and supports a single user, mobile access and data sharing. 100 GB and 500 GB plans are available for 9.9€ (about $13 USD) and 29.9€ ($38 USD), respectively. The paid packages offer more sharing options including file upload via email or web form and support additional protocols like SMB/CIFS and rsync.
