Ever wonder what it’s like having your business acquired…almost? Online backup provider Backblaze does.
I wrote about Backblaze almost a year ago (How To Build a Cheap Petabyte Server: Lessons Learned), describing how they decided to build their own storage module for their budding online storage business.
With all the news lately about 3PAR’s dance with Dell and HP, I was thinking about Backblaze the other day and whether they, too, had been or would be courted. So I was surprised this morning when an email arrived from Backblaze CEO Gleb Budman, with the news that they had made it all the way to the altar, only to be left standing alone.
Budman doesn’t name names, but does describe the whole acquisition process, with surprisingly little rancor. The lessons learned aren’t just applicable to buyouts, but for any deal where trust is at the heart.
