Update – QNAP has announced two Intel-based 16 bay 3U rackmount NASes.
The TS-EC1679U-RP is powered by a quad-core 3.1 GHz Intel Xeon E3-1225 Processor with 4 GB of DDR3 ECC RAM, expandable to 16 GB. The TS-1679U-RP runs on a 3.3 GHz Intel Core i3-2120 with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, expandable to 8 GB.
QNAP says both models can deliver 2,000 MB/sec and 200,000 IOPS throughput.
Both NASes feature 16 hot-swappable, lockable bays supporting 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drives, dual, redundant 600W power supplies and two eSATA, four USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports. VGA and HDMI ports are also available for console monitor connection.
Four 10/100/1000 built-in Ethernet ports support failover and aggregation. Additional Gigabit or 10 GbE ports can be added via two PCIe expansion slots for more networking options (see graphic below).
Multiple RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 6, 5+ hot spare, 6+ hot spare, 10+ hot spare, single-disk and JBOD volumes are supported with a Global Hot Spare feature allowing a spare drive to replace a failed drive on any RAID volume.
The new series will run QNAP’s latest V3.6 firmware with an extensive feature set that includes multiple volume support with optional encryption, iSCSI target and initiator support and support for VMware, Citrix XenServer and Windows Hyper-V virtualization.
Both the TS-EC1679U-RP and TS-1679U-RP are shipping shortly. Pricing was not announced. MSRPs are $5299 and $4499, respectively.
