Update: CSIRO shuts down Buffalo WLAN shipments

Updated 6/21/07

Last Friday, a federal court in Texas granted Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, an injunction to prevent infringement of its wireless network patent by Buffalo-group companies in the US. The injunction prevents the sales of all wireless LAN products by Buffalo until a license for CSIRO technology is negotiated.

CSIRO had begun a test case against the Buffalo companies in February 2005 in Texas, after the industry had failed to accept CSIRO’s offers to license its wireless local area network (WLAN) patents on reasonable and nondiscriminatory (RAND) terms.

AirMagnet adds 11n to Laptop Analyzer

AirMagnet today announced a new version of its Laptop Analyzer that natively decodes and analyzes 802.11n Wi-Fi networks.

The new 7.5 version of Laptop Analyzer provides visibility into all wireless channels, devices, speeds, interference issues and RF spectrum for pre-deployment planning and post-deployment management of 802.11n Wi-Fi networks.

The new version can differentiate between standards-compliant and pre-standard 802.11n devices and supports monitoring both 20 and 40 MHz bandwidth modes and detects and classifies the higher data rates used by 802.11n devices.

Zyxel adds ‘ultra-thin’ AP system

Zyxel has announced its WLAN Controller System, which it bills as the industry’s first "ultra-thin" access point.

The managed WLAN solution includes the NXC-8160 controller and NWA-8500 AP and features what Zyxel calls “channel blanket technology”. Zyxel said the technology guarantees throughput, delivers zero delay roaming, eliminates site survey and channel planning and reduces total cost of ownership (TCO) by more than 40 percent.

The system offloads all functions of the AP to a centralized controller and puts all APs on the same channel, using the same BSSID. Zyxel's "channel blanket" technology prevents the multiple APs on the same channel from interfering with each other. This technique provides zero delay roaming, because roaming no longer requires switching between multiple channels or having to reconnect to each access point. Each AP has two radios, enabling the user to dedicate one channel for voice and one for data.

Update:D-Link announces dual-band draft 11n media bridge

Updated

D-Link today introduced a wireless Ethernet bridge using dual-band draft 11n technology at Microsoft's WinHEC event.

The D-Link Xtreme N Duo MediaBridge (DAP-1555) allows users to add 5 GHz Draft 802.11n capabilities to existing wired or wireless routers or other Ethernet-based products. The DAP-1555 works with dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) draft 802.11n wireless devices as well as legacy 802.11a/b/g products. Up to five MediaBridge adapters can be used to connect a router to Ethernet-capable devices such game consoles, digital video recorders and networked media adapters.

Security features includeWPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) for push-button secure wireless network configuration as well as WEP, WPA or WPA2 wireless security. Other features include a 5-Port 10/100 switch and UPnP support.
